**Definition:** Human TREM2 wild-type allele is located in the vicinity of 6p21.1 and is approximately 5 kb in length. This allele, which encodes triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 protein, is involved in inflammation. Expression of the gene may be associated with chronic inflammation and mutation of the gene is associated with polycystic lipomembranous osteodysplasia with sclerosing leukoencephalopathy (Nasu-Hakola disease).
