**Definition:** A species of nonsegmented, negative-strand ssRNA viruses in the family Paramyxoviridae. Infections with human metapneumovirus can cause upper and lower respiratory tract infections in patients of all ages. This virus is second only to respiratory syncytial virus as the most commonly identified cause of pediatric lower respiratory illness.
