Paneth Cell

**Definition:** A granule-rich columnar epithelial cell found in the mucous membrane lining at the base of the small intestine crypts of Lieberkühn. Paneth Cells secrete antimicrobial peptides that contribute to microbial density in the lumen of the small intestine and in the maintenance of the gastrointestinal barrier.
