Schwann Cell

**Semantic type:** Cell

**Definition:** A supporting cell of the peripheral nervous system that aids the growth, development, function, maintenance and repair of peripheral nerves. Myelinating Schwann cells form the myelin sheath around large diameter axons while non-myelinating Schwann cells bundle together portions of several unmyelinated smaller diameter axons and may also play a role in the formation and maintenance of synaptic connections in the neuromuscular junction.
