**Definition:** Dihydroxy or trihydroxy polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) belonging to a group of specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPM) that are either endogenously-derived from polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids or chemically synthesized, with potential anti-inflammatory and protective activities. Resolvins may promote the resolution of inflammatory responses by interacting with specific G protein-coupled receptors on inflammatory cells in various tissues and may prevent tissue damage.
