Rhizopus oryzae

**Definition:** A species of filamentous fungi in the phylum Zygomycota characterized by sporangiophores that arise from nodes at the point where the rhizoids are formed. R. oryzae is a causative agent of mucormycosis in immunocompromised individuals. This species is used in the fermentation of tempeh.
