**Definition:** A biologically active family of human endogenous retroviral elements that are found in human and primate genomes and resemble or are derived from retroviral genomic material. Aberrant expression of these elements may be associated with testicular germ cell tumors, breast cancer, type 1 diabetes mellitus, motor neuron disease.
