Type III Epithelial Receptor Cell

**Definition:** A light cell found in taste buds, characterized by afferent synaptic specializations to intragemminal nerve endings including increased density of the plasma membrane along the nerve and aggregations of synaptic vesicles, and by the presence of cored vesicles of 80-150 nm in diameter. The core is dense and the cell is immunoreactive for 5-hydroxytryptamine, neural cell adhesion molecule, and PGP 9.5.
