**Definition:** Organisms without a cell nucleus or any other membrane-bound organelles. Most prokaryotes are bacteria but the group includes both the Bacteria and the Archaea. Eukaryota, Bacteria, and Archaea are now considered the top nodes of a three-domain taxonomy system.
