Recombinant Epidermal Growth Factor

**Semantic type:** Chemical Viewed Functionally

**Definition:** A recombinant therapeutic agent which is chemically identical to or similar to endogenous epidermal growth factor (EGF). As a mitogen, EGF stimulates the proliferation of epidermal, epithelial, and embryonic cells. This agent is also a strong chemoattractant for fibroblasts and epithelial cells and is an important factor mediating angiogenesis and wound healing. EGF and EGF-like factors have been shown to promote regeneration of the epidermis and the generation of granulation tissues following severe burns and, when locally administered, may improve healing of injured corneal tissues.
