Lumbrical Muscle

**Definition:** One of a group of four short muscles in the hand that originate on the radial and ulnar sides of the tendons of the flexor digitorum profundus and insert in the radial lateral band of the extensor expansion tendon; they are involved in the extension of the proximal and distal interphalangeal joints, and are supplied by the median and ulnar nerves and the palmar metacarpal arteries.
