**Definition:** An adverse event in a newborn characterized by progressive alveolar atelectasis from birth due to an abnormality of synthesis, function or metabolism of surfactant, characterized by respiratory failure and an abnormal chest radiograph showing diffuse reticulogranular densities and air bronchograms.
