**Definition:** An adverse event in a newborn characterized by electroencephalogram (EEG)- proven seizures with life-threatening consequences (e.g. need for ventilation); status epilepticus (greater than 30 minutes of seizure activity within any 60 minute period) despite multiple anti-seizure drugs.
