**Definition:** Human MUC5B wild-type allele is located in the vicinity of 11p15.5 and is approximately 39 kb in length. This allele, which encodes mucin-5B protein, is involved in the lubrication of the mouth, airways and cervix. Mutation of the gene is associated with susceptibility to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
