Sickle Cell Solubility Test

**Definition:** A method of screening for sickle cell disease or trait in which sodium dithionite or a similar chemical is used to lyse red blood cells in a blood sample. This allows any hemoglobin S, which does not dissolve easily in plasma, to form crystals that visibly cloud the plasma.
