Topical Thrombin Gel

**Definition:** A topical porous, pliable, purified porcine skin gelatin-based pad containing bovine-derived thrombin, with coagulant and hemostatic activities. Upon topical application of the thrombin gel at the site of tissue injury and bleeding, blood is taken up by the pad/sponge and thrombin cleaves fibrinogen into fibrin, causing platelet aggregation and thrombus formation at the site of injury.
