**Definition:** A standardized index that was developed by Best et al 1976 as part of the National Cooperative Crohn's Disease Study to assess the severity of Crohn's Disease. A multiple regression computer program was utilized to derive an equation for the prediction of disease activity from eight variables assessed over the past seven days, including number of stools, abdominal pain, general well-being, extraintestinal complications, antidiarrheal agents used, abdominal mass felt on palpation, hematocrit, and body weight. Scores range from 0 to 600, with a score of less than 150 corresponding to remission, 150 to 219 corresponding to mildly active disease, 220 to 450 corresponding to moderately active disease, and greater than 450 corresponding to severe disease.
