Gelatinous Bone Marrow Transformation

**Definition:** A rare condition characterized by bone marrow fat cell atrophy, loss of hematopoietic cells, and bone marrow deposition of extracellular gelatinous substances containing mucopolysaccharides rich in hyaluronic acid. The pathogenesis is unknown. It presents with weight loss and anemia. It has been associated with infections, alcoholism, anorexia nervosa, cachexia, end stage renal disease, and cancers.
