SUMO-Activating Enzyme

**Definition:** SUMO-activating enzyme is comprised of SUMO-activating enzyme subunits 1 (SAE1) and 2 (UBA2). This protein complex modifies the C-terminus of SUMO-1 and transfers the SUMO group to SUMO-conjugating enzyme UBC9. This promotes the SUMOylation of target proteins. Modification with SUMO regulates the localization and stability of the target protein.
