**Definition:** A family of human endogenous retroviral (HERV) genetic sequences that have been stably integrated human genomes and resemble or were derived from class I gammaretrovirus sequences. Expression of HERV group E sequences have been documented in association with malignancies, autoimmune diseases and human placentation.
