**Definition:** Human SIGMAR1 wild-type allele is located in the vicinity of 9p13.3 and is approximately 3 kb in length. This allele, which encodes sigma non-opioid intracellular receptor 1 protein, plays a role in the cellular localization of mitochondria and lipids and in binding certain psychoactive drugs. Mutation of the gene is associated with juvenile amyotrophic lateral sclerosis 16 and autosomal recessive, distal spinal muscular atrophy 2.
