Colloidal Bismuth Pectin Granules

**Semantic type:** Inorganic Chemical|Pharmacologic Substance

**Definition:** A granule-based formulation containing colloidal bismuth pectin (CBP), with potential cytoprotective activities. Upon oral administration of the colloidal bismuth, bismuth inhibits peptic activity, increases mucosal secretions of prostaglandins and bicarbonate and acts as a barrier to prevent damage by acids. It also prevents adhesion of Helicobacter (H.) pylori to epithelial cells and can inhibit enzymes secreted by H. pylori. This protects against ulcer formation and may help heal existing ulcers.
