NADPH Oxidase Complex

**Definition:** A membrane-bound enzyme complex expressed in neutrophils or in cells of the vasculature and thyroid that faces the extracellular space and catalyzes the production of a superoxide free radical by transferring one electron to oxygen from (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate) NADPH. In neutrophils, the superoxide is generated as part of the respiratory burst involved in immune responses.
