**Definition:** A protein complex that represses transcription by stimulating chromatin compaction through the trimethylation of lysine-27 of histone H3, which recruits Polycomb repressive complex 1. This complex is involved in embryonic development, X chromosome inactivation, maintenance of stem cell fate and imprinting.
