**Definition:** A major lipid building block of complex lipids comprised of carbon atoms arranged in chains of various length, unsaturation, branching and other features. It includes the saturated fatty acids palmitic acid and stearic acid, the monounsaturated fatty acid oleic acid, the polyunsaturated fatty acids linoleic acid and arachidonic acid, the eicosanoids prostaglandins and leukotrienes, and other compounds such as fatty acyl-CoA's and fatty amides.
