This allele, which encodes thyrotropin subunit beta protein, plays a role in thyroid development and thyroid hormone production. Mutation of the gene is associated with congenital nongoitrous hypothyroidism type 4, congenital central and secondary hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
