Collagenase Clostridium histolyticum
**Semantic type:** Amino Acid, Peptide, or Protein|Enzyme|Pharmacologic Substance
**Definition:** A therapeutic enzyme produced by the bacterium Clostridium histolyticum, with enzymatic debriding activity. Upon injection of collagenase clostridium histolyticum to the affected area(s), the collagenase hydrolyzes collagen in the collagen triple helix structure resulting in lysis and solubilization of collagen deposits and plaques. This may promote healing and reduce symptoms caused by excessive collagen deposits and accumulation, such as stiffness of the tissue and pain.
