**Definition:** Human TFAM wild-type allele is located in the vicinity of 10q21.1 and is approximately 14 kb in length. This allele, which encodes transcription factor A, mitochondrial protein, plays a role in the regulation of expression of genes encoded by mitochondrial DNA. Mutation of the gene is associated with mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome 15.
