Diffuse Alveolar Damage

**Definition:** A histologic finding evident following acute lung injury. It is characterized by an acute phase with edema, deposition of hyaline membranes, and inflammation and is followed by an organizing phase with alveolar septal fibrosis and type II pneumocyte hyperplasia.
