Selvigaltin
**Semantic type:** Pharmacologic Substance
**Definition:** An orally bioavailable alpha-monogalactoside and inhibitor of galectin-3 (Gal-3), with potential anti-fibrotic and antineoplastic activities. Upon oral administration, selvigaltin targets and binds to Gal-3, and inhibits its activity. This may prevent Gal-3-mediated signaling pathways and may reduce or prevent liver inflammation and fibrosis. Selvigaltin may also prevent tumor cell proliferation and induce apoptosis in Gal-3-expressing tumor cells. It also restores T-cell activity. Gal-3, a pro-fibrotic, beta-galactoside-binding lectin, is expressed in multiple cell types including macrophages, fibroblasts, activated T-lymphocytes and epithelial cells. It plays an important role in inflammation and tissue fibrosis. It is also often dysregulated in cancers, and may play a role in angiogenesis, cell proliferation and cell survival, and evasion of immune responses.
