Upon oral administration, urolithin A supplement activates mitophagy, which may improve mitochondrial and cellular health. Urolithin A, one of the natural polyphenolic metabolites of ellagic acid and ellagitannins produced by the gut microbiota, also acts as a direct free radical scavenger, which may protect against inflammation- and reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced cellular damage.
