**Definition:** Human GSTZ1 wild-type allele is located in the vicinity of 14q24.3 and is approximately 11 kb in length. This allele, which encodes maleylacetoacetate isomerase protein, plays a role in the metabolism of glutathione, aromatic amino acids, dichloroacetic acid and maleylacetoacetate. Various haplotypes of this gene affect the rate of metabolism of dichloroacetate (DCA) and other halogenated carboxylic acids. Mutations in the gene are associated with maleylacetoacetate isomerase deficiency.
