Aminoacyl-tRNA Ligase Family

**Definition:** A family of ligases that are involved in translation. These enzymes catalyze the transesterification reaction that attaches amino acids with their cognate tRNAs. There are cytoplasmic and mitochondrial forms for many of these enzymes. Some of the cytoplasmic amino acid synthetases are targets for autoantibodies in the autoimmune diseases polymyositis and dermatomyositis.
