**Definition:** Human NEU1 wild-type allele is located in the vicinity of 6p21.33 and is approximately 5 kb in length. This allele, which encodes sialidase-1 protein, is involved in the removal of sialic acid moieties from glycoconjugates. Mutation of the gene is associated with sialidosis types 1 and 2.
