**Definition:** C5a anaphylatoxin (74 aa, ~8 kDa) is encoded by the human C5 gene. This protein is involved in the induction of smooth muscle contraction, the regulation of vascular permeability and the degranulation of both mast cells and basophils and the modulation of pathogen phagocytosis by neutrophils and monocytes.
