6-Hydroxymelatonin

**Definition:** A naturally occurring, endogenous tryptamine that is the major active metabolite of the hormone melatonin. 6-hydroxymelatonin (6-OHM) binds to and activates melatonin receptors, which is involved in regulating sleep and wake cycles and the synthesis and secretion of other neurotransmitters such as dopamine and GABA.
