PARP Gene Family

**Semantic type:** Gene or Genome

**Definition:** A family of genes encoding enzymes that catalyze both the transfer of an adenosine diphosphate (ADP)-ribosyl group of oxidized nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD(+)) to the carboxyl group in protein substrates and the transfer of additional ADP-ribosyl groups to the 2'-position of the terminal adenosine moiety. This process (poly-ADP-ribosylation) plays a role a number of cellular processes, including DNA repair, genomic stability and the regulation of programmed cell death.

**Synonyms:** - PARP Gene - Poly(ADP-Ribose)Polymerase Family Gene - Poly(ADP-Ribose)Polymerase Gene
