Benign Epithelial Melanosis of the Conjunctiva
**Semantic type:** Neoplastic Process
**Definition:** A benign melanocytic lesion that arises from the conjunctiva and is characterized by the presence of increased melanin pigmentation within the conjunctival melanocytes. Atypical features such as mitotic activity, nuclear enlargement, and prominent nucleoli are absent. It is usually bilateral and is frequently seen in people with Fitzpatrick skin types IV -VI. In White populations the occurrence is low. The prognosis is very good and malignant transformation to melanocytic intraepithelial neoplasia and/or melanoma is very rare.
