This allele, which encodes uromodulin protein, is involved in collecting duct development, glomerular filtration, cytokine-mediated inflammation, uropathogen aggregation and colloid osmotic pressure. Mutations in the gene are associated with autosomal dominant tubulointerstitial kidney disease 1.
