**Definition:** Vasoactive intestinal peptide (28 aa, ~3 kDa) is encoded by the human VIP gene. This protein is involved in vasodilation, arterial blood pressure, glycogenolysis, stimulation of myocardial contractility, and relaxation of the smooth muscles of the trachea, stomach and gall bladder.
