Low-Dose Naltrexone
**Semantic type:** Pharmacologic Substance
**Definition:** A noroxymorphone derivative and an opioid antagonist, taken at a dose that is up to one-tenth of the dose that is usually taken for opioid addiction, with potential analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities. Upon administration, and although the exact mechanism of action through which low-dose naltrexone exerts its anti-inflammatory activity has not been fully elucidated, low-dose naltrexone may inhibit toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), thereby inhibiting TLR4-mediated pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion and inflammatory response. At the low dosage level, naltrexone exerts paradoxical analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities.
**Synonyms:** - Low Dose Naltrexone
