This allele, which encodes oxygen-dependent coproporphyrinogen-III oxidase, mitochondrial protein, plays a role in the biosynthesis of heme via production of protoporphyrinogen-IX. Mutations in the gene are associated with coproporphyria and harderoporphyria.
