Akkermansia muciniphila/Anaerobutyricum hallii/Bifidobacterium infantis/Clostridium beijerinckii/Clostridium butyricum/Inulin WBF-038

**Semantic type:** Pharmacologic Substance

**Definition:** An orally bioavailable, synbiotic supplement containing the five probiotic strains: Akkermansia muciniphila (A. muciniphila), Anaerobutyricum hallii, Bifidobacterium infantis, Clostridium beijerinckii, and Clostridium butyricum, in addition to the chicory-derived prebiotic soluble dietary fiber inulin, with potential gastrointestinal (GI) microflora restoring, immunomodulating, cognition-, musculoskeletal-, metabolic-enhancing, and protective activities. Upon oral administration of Akkermansia muciniphila/Anaerobutyricum hallii/Bifidobacterium infantis/Clostridium beijerinckii/Clostridium butyricum/inulin WBF-038, the five bacterial strains improve the diversity of the gut microbiome and modulate, as well as maintain, the composition of the GI microflora, thereby enhancing gut health. During colonization in the GI tract, the bacteria may form a protective intestinal barrier that may help maintain gut lining and prevent damage to the mucosal epithelia caused by toxins and attachment of potential pathogens, thereby protecting against bacterial translocation and infection. The bacteria also secrete short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) such as butyrate, which further protects the gut and immune system. Butyrate binds to receptors in the gut mucosa and stimulates the release of glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), which may help restore satiety, reduce appetite, improve insulin secretion, reduce hepatic glucose output, and regulate gastric emptying. Altogether, WBF-038 may prevent inflammation and modulate the immune system, may improve metabolic health, improve blood glucose regulation, may prevent metabolic syndrome, improve bone turnover and prevent bone loss, and may improve cognition. Inulin promotes growth and activity of beneficial GI bacteria, thereby altering the endogenous flora further and promote beneficial changes in the activity of the microbiome.
