N-Terminal Pro-Peptide of Type III Collagen

**Semantic type:** Amino Acid, Peptide, or Protein

**Definition:** N-terminal pro-peptide of type III collagen (130 aa, ~13 kDa) is encoded by the human COL3A1 gene. This peptide is produced by the cleavage of the propeptide from the N-terminus of the triple helical procollagen form of collagen alpha-1(III) by the enzyme ADAMTS2 (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs 2). Once the C- and N-terminal propeptides are removed, the mature triple helical type III collagen fibrils can be crosslinked to form higher order collagen structures. This protein is a marker for type III collagen fibril synthesis and liver and kidney diseases.
