Gangrenous Ergotism

**Definition:** The initial ischemic phase of ergotism, the intoxication caused by consumption of food contaminated with alkaloids produced by the fungal species, Claviceps purpurea. Ischemia of the extremities (dry gangrene)progresses to nausea and vomiting, and then eventually seizures.
