**Definition:** An organismal metabolic process where the body burns fat for energy instead of carbohydrates, resulting in a buildup of ketones. This process occurs when glucose availability is limited by normal dietary practices, such as following a low-carb diet or fasting or pathologic factors such as starvation, genetic predisposition or diabetes.
