**Definition:** Human SERPINI1 wild-type allele is located in the vicinity of 3q26.1 and is approximately 90 kb in length. This allele, which encodes neuroserpin protein, is involved in serine proteinase inhibition and the protection of neurons from damage by tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA). Mutations in the gene are associated with familial encephalopathy with neuroserpin inclusion bodies.
