Apoferritin

**Definition:** The ~450 kDa non-iron containing cytosolic globular protein complex consisting of 24 subunits comprised of various ratios of ferritin heavy (FTH1) and light (FTL) chains. The ratio of FTH1 to FTL varies based on environmental conditions including the anatomic location, the presence of infection or inflammation and iron-related conditions, including hemochromatosis and certain neurological disorders.
