Orellanine

**Definition:** A nephrotoxic mycotoxin found in mushrooms of the Cortinarius family, that may be used for the treatment of renal cell carcinoma. Upon administration, orellanine specifically targets and kills cells that originate from proximal tubule cells of the kidney, including local and metastatic renal cancer cells. Orellanine may kill proximal tubule cells by disrupting energy metabolism, protein synthesis and cellular growth, and inducing oxidative stress, which results in the induction of apoptosis and cell death.
