Resistant Potato Starch

**Semantic type:** Organic Chemical

**Definition:** A dietary supplement containing a prebiotic resistant potato starch, with potential digestive modulating, gut microbiome-enhancing, immunomodulating, and anti-inflammatory activities. Upon oral administration, resistant potato starch is not metabolized or absorbed in the small intestine and enters the colon unaltered. Once in the colon, the starch is fermented by anaerobic colonic bacteria and produces short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), including butyrate, which has anti-inflammatory and immunoregulatory activities. This starch may have beneficial effects on the gut microbiome by increasing the growth of beneficial gut bacteria and reducing the growth of bad bacteria. This may improve gut barrier and bowel function, may decrease systemic inflammation, may improve metabolic health, and may reduce musculoskeletal symptoms through gut microbiome-mediated effects.

**Synonyms:** - RPS - RPS-based Dietary Supplement - Resistant Potato Starch-based Dietary Supplement
